This is an English translation of the core of "探索的コーパス言語学：データ主導の日本語研究・試論" published by Osaka University Press in 2019. It advocates a new corpus linguistics based on "explaining data by data" and discusses new possibilities for Japanese language research based on case studies and methodological considerations.
