Alexandre Dumas a fait ses débuts brillants en 1829 avec Henri III et sa cour, enchaînant les succès théâtraux avec Antony, La Tour de Nesle, Kean, Caligula, et Mademoiselle de Belle-Isle. Ce n'est qu'après 1839, avec le roman historique La Comtesse de Salisbury et Édouard III, qu'il a fait ses débuts dans le monde du roman, où il captiverait plus tard le monde entier avec Les Trois Mousquetaires et Le Comte de Monte-Cristo. "Othon the Archer," a short story by Alexandre Dumas, was serialized in the French daily newspaper Le Siècle from its inaugural issue on December 25, 1838, until January 24 of the following year. Published as a standalone book in 1840, the work is a fantastic tale set in the Holy Roman Empire, skillfully weaving in an anecdote from the First Crusade. At its core, however, the story can be considered a companion piece to Dumas's first major historical novel, The Countess of Salisbury and Edward III (translated into Japanese by the author of the original text, published by Digital Estate in 2025). "Othon the Archer" is a short story rich with historical context and vibrant imagination.
The narrative follows the protagonist, Othon, who returns from the Crusades to face challenges and adventures in his hometown.
