物語は近未来21世紀初頭。 地球上のあちこちで、肩甲骨が翼状に変容し、幻覚におかされる天使病という死に至る病が蔓延してきた。 その感染によって世界中の各国では旧来の秩序は崩壊。 宗教、経済、軍事など、さまざまな問題もはらみ、人の心の不安がむき出しとなった世界--- すべてが異端の地となった世界を、その「発端」をさぐるため、謎の少女セラと二人の男・バスタザル、メルキオル、 そしてバセットハウンドのガスパルは、旅を続けていた。 目指すは新疆ウイグル自治区南部にある中国最大の砂漠、タクラマカン砂漠---。 天使、鳥、バセットハウンド--- など。 作中で使われているモチーフを見れば一目瞭然ですが、押井守の原作として、 宮崎駿氏による『風の谷のナウシカ』の長期連載が終了した「アニメージュ」誌で、 その枠を継ぐ漫画作品として企画されたものです。 しかし、連載が1年を越えるころを境に、押井と今の対立が表面化します。 著者表記の「原作」が「原案」へと変化し、物語は完結を迎えないまま、 全16回の連載が過ぎた1995年11月号で、唐突に終了します。 ほぼ同時期に、押井守は世界的評価を経た監督作『GHOST IN THE SHELL / 攻殻機動隊』を発表。アニメーション監督に転身した今敏は1997年に、こちらも海外に大きな影響を与えた初監督作品『PERFECT BLUE』の公開に至ります。 本作品執筆を契機に残念ながら決別をすることとなってしまう二人の世界的クリエーター。 互いに長年口をつぐんでいたものの、このたびの《増補復刻版》では、その一方である押井守のインタビューを新規取材・収録するスペシャル版としてお届けします。
