While the truth is uncovered relatively early, the core of "why it happened" is deeply rotten, emitting a sinister, nauseating stench.
Even so, based on the meticulous depiction of the police force as an old-fashioned, male-dominated society, I had assumed the author was a man. I was genuinely surprised to learn from the afterword that the writer was a woman!
